Apples of Uncommon Character: Heirlooms, Modern Classics, and Little-Known Wonders by Rowan Jacobsen

In his classic A Geography of Oysters, Rowan Jacobsen forever changed the way America talks about its best bivalve. Now he does the same for our favorite fruit, showing us that there is indeed life beyond Red Delicious-and even Honeycrisp. While supermarkets limit their offerings to a few waxy options, apple trees with lives spanning human generations are producing characterful varieties-and now they are in the midst of a rediscovery. From heirlooms to new designer breeds, a delicious diversity of apples is out there for the eating.

Apples have strong personalities, ranging from crabby to wholesome. The Black Oxford apple is actually purple and looks like a plum. The Knobbed Russet looks like the love child of a toad and a potato. (But don't be fooled by its looks.) The D'Arcy Spice leaves a hint of allspice on the tongue. Cut Hidden Rose open, and its inner secret is revealed.

With more than 150 art-quality color photographs,
Apples of Uncommon Character shows us the fruit in all its glory. Jacobsen collected specimens both common and rare from all over North America, selecting 120 to feature, including the best varieties for eating, baking, and hard cider making. Each is accompanied by a photograph, history, lore, and a list of characteristics. The book also includes 20 recipes, savory and sweet, resources for buying and growing, and a guide to the best apple festivals. It's a must-have for every foodie.

Nice basic watch
Color: Black Watch-G5010
My father-in-law does not like new technology so when I saw this wat I knew he'd love it. It is your basic watch, works well and it's waterproof so very helpful as he fishes a lot! The overall appearance of the watch is really elegant; the watch itself is thinner than most which gives it a really nice look and I was really surprised at how good the quality is on it. It comes with the little tool to tack links out so you can adjust the fit and I feel like it looks nicer than his more expensive watches. So far, it's kept time well and he's been extremely happy with it!

Clean simple design looks sharp, a nice watch at a great price
Color: Black Face-G5010, Color: Black Face-G5010
This watch has a nice big face that looks elegant in simplicity. The hour indicators are raised and very shiny along with the hands. On the black face, it’s very easy to read. The one that I have has a soft strap so you don’t have to remove any links. It’s ready to wear out of the box. I don’t know that the strap is leather, but it was stiff and in working with it a little bit to loosen it, it appears that it will hold up well. I wondered if it would be fragile, but it doesn’t seem so. The soft strap makes it comfortable and maybe a little lighter so it’s easy to wear this watch. Overall, it just seems like a very well done watch and a great value and a very least a very fair value.

Better options for the price
Color: Black Watch-G5010, Color: Black Watch-G5010
While having a striking appearance, the band has many rough edges and pulls your arm hairs. It is a good size and looks good at the surface level, but it is very light almost to the point that it feels cheap or not durable. This makes the price feel unnecessary, especially when compared to other more substantial or quality feeling options at this price point and below. If you just need a watch, it’ll do but I felt that it fell short in places, especially the band.

Beautiful Watch, and easy to set up.
Color: 5535-ZP-blue
Looks classy, very easy to set the time, day of the week, and date. It is a class cover so it can break if dropped (my kids broke my first one), but it's inexpensive so it wasn't a huge deal. It's easy to read. Battery hasn't died for months. It's easy to put on and the size works for me.
