How to Install Extreme Networks ExtremeSwitching 5420F Ethernet Switch

Installing the 5420F is straightforward for administrators familiar with enterprise switches. Follow these best practices to deploy quickly and securely, while ensuring long-term reliability and ease of management:

  • Prepare the rack and environment: Verify mounting rails, rack space availability, and proper airflow. Ensure the installation area maintains appropriate temperature and humidity levels for optimal performance.
  • Unpack and inspect components: Confirm all listed parts are present, including the 5420F chassis, power supplies (if applicable), and management console access accessories. Check for any shipping damage before powering on.
  • Connect power and grounding: Attach power cords to the switch and connect to an appropriate power source. If redundant power is used, install additional power supplies and configure failover settings as needed.
  • Establish initial management access: Connect a management workstation to a console or management port. Access the switch’s console for initial configuration and set a secure administrator password.
  • Configure basic network settings: Assign an initial management IP, set up VLANs for management and user traffic, and enable essential features such as QoS, ACLs, and port security according to your security policy.
  • Enable PoE behavior and uplink media: If PoE devices will be deployed, enable PoE on the appropriate ports and configure any power budgets. Attach fiber or copper uplinks to connect to upstream core or distribution devices.
  • Set up monitoring and access controls: Configure SNMP or telemetry as needed, enable logging, and apply access control policies to manage who can administer the switch and view traffic statistics.
  • Implement security best practices: Enable features such as storm control, DHCP snooping, and dynamic ARP inspection where applicable. Regularly update firmware to protect against vulnerabilities.
  • Test connectivity and performance: Validate end-to-end VLANs, QoS policies, and PoE operation. Run basic throughput tests to verify the switch meets your required performance targets.
  • Document the deployment: Record IP addresses, VLAN schemas, QoS policies, and firmware versions for future maintenance and troubleshooting.

Garmin has been a super disappointment.
Style: Alpha TT 25
FOR THE REMOTE: For reasons I cannot fathom as a software developer, the Garmin developers chose to program the handheld to wait for GPS lock before allowing you to control the collar. This is stupid beyond belief and causes frustration that simply shouldn't be. Look Garmin, the remote should be able to communicate with the collar first and foremost. I want to be able to power everything up, put the collar on the dog, and walk out the door. If my dog sees a rabbit or deer, I want to be able to remind him not to chase. I DON'T want to stand there staring at my remote greeted by the message "Waiting for GPS" with all the buttons non-responsive. Fix this! This should be super easy to fix with a firmware update. Fix it and I'll gladly give this unit 10 stars! GPS is way too finicky to have to wait for it before using the basic controls. Update: SERIOUSLY!! HOT GARBAGE. This remote couldn't find a satellite if I stuck one up its... AGH.. and you can't communicate with your dog's collar until it does. FOR THE COLLAR: You won't be happy with the beeper.. It's super quiet. The light is an awesome feature. Vibration may work for your dog, mine doesn't seem to notice it at all. If the antenna was any longer it would pick up signals from outer space. Buy the shorter one if you decide to go with this unit and don't need to keep your dog from crossing an ocean. Seriously though... I'll never buy anything Garmin again. I would recommend you don't either.

Works Great, Use Daily, No Issues
Style: Alpha TT 25
While expensive, this product is rock-solid and has not given me a single issue over 2 years of use. Would buy again, highly satisfied. Can't beat the functionality or peace of mind of knowing right where our beloved family pet and hunting companion is located.

Great little radio, it was.
Great value for the price. I have received excellent audio reports on a couple repeaters I have tested on so far, on the first day with the radio. Love how you can customize all the display background and text colors. Tempature sensing fan works properly. Unfortunately, they do not send a programming cable with this radio, very annoying! It will not save offset and t-ctcs tone into memory mode when programming by hand, which is unfortunate because it is easier to program by hand than some other cheap radios, like the Baofeng keypad. I really wanted to upload all my channels via Chirp, and to make sure Chirp is actually supported before posting review, but it is what it is, and now I have to find a proper programming cable, then hope I did not pick one that does not work. Other than this very disappointing fact, this radio is well worth the money and I highly recommend if you are on a budget or just getting into the hobby. I have mainly been working HF since getting my General ticket and have made contact all over the world, so you can rest assured this review is by someone who knows what they are talking about. Grab one while you can, you will not be disappointed, except for them not including a programming cable! Edit: Have to return, squelch not working on second day. Right in the middle of a net, had to use monitor button to finish my contact. Turn monitor off and the receiver will not open squelch, which is set to 1. Can set squelch to 0 and receive but anyone who runs VHF/UHF knows that, unlike HF, an open squelch is just too noisy. Spent hours trying to fix, no joy! 73, Stephen
