artist bio
Robert Henderson Grieve was born in Brighton, Melbourne on 30 November, 1924. He was an Australian painter and print maker.
Grieve studied at the Regent Polytechnic in London, from 1953 to 1955 and including lithography under Henry Trivick. He then taught lithography at Swinburne Technical College between 1956 and 1958 and is recognised for helping to raise the standards of contemporary print making in Victoria. His semi-abstract painting was greatly influenced by the contemporary art of Japan, where he met his wife and lived and studied for an extended period. He exhibited his art in Tokyo whilst living there. Grieve was president of the Victorian branch of the Contemporary Art Society from 1967 to 1987.
He was the recipient of a number of art awards including the Cato prize at Victorian Artists' Society in 1959, the Vizard-Wholohan print prize in 1960 and 1972, and regional art prizes in Gundagai in 1960, Wollongong in 1962, Portland in 1962, Bendigo in 1964 and Geelong in 1965.
Examples of Grieve’s work are held in public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales. the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and the Newcastle Art Gallery.
Grieve passed away on 15 December, 2006.
