In 'Bird Song', a new series of original lithographs made in collaboration with APW printers, Richard Lewer highlights some of Australia's threatened species - the featured birds range from vulnerable to the critically endangered. Lewer aims to create a space for these birds to be appreciated, an archive for their existence and beauty. Given that birds are so integral to the artist's practice, the vulnerability of the subject matter is not only ecologically devastating but also personally challenging.
The Black-necked Stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) is the only stork native to Australia. Characterised by their long red legs and extremely strong beaks, which they use to hunt snakes, frogs, turtles, eels and fish in wetland marshes. Most prey is caught by the bird jabbing and seizing it with its large bill. Some food is caught by lunging forward with a large stride or by leaping into the air. The Black-necked Stork is found mostly along coastal areas in the north and east of the country. Sadly, they are now extinct in many areas of New South Wales due to the modification of floodplains and tall reed beds for agriculture, mining and human settlement.
'Bird Song' premieres a new suite of fifteen original prints by Richard Lewer produced in collaboration with APW printers at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 2024.
