Saxophone Colossus is the sixth studio album by American jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, widely regarded as one of his greatest achievements and a landmark in jazz history. Recorded in a single session on June 22, 1956, the album features a stellar quartet: Rollins on tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The session was produced by Bob Weinstock and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder at his legendary Hackensack, New Jersey studio.

At the time of the recording, Rollins was a member of the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet. Tragically, just four days after this session, both Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell died in a car crash. Rollins, who was not in the vehicle, continued to collaborate with Roach on future recordings, including Freedom Suite (1958).

Released by Prestige Records, Saxophone Colossus was met with critical acclaim and played a central role in elevating Rollins's profile in the jazz world. The album includes iconic tracks such as the calypso-inflected "St. Thomas" and the introspective ballad "You Do Something to Me."

In recognition of its cultural and historical importance, Saxophone Colossus was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2016.
