One of the most amazing things about being Irish, is that you can travel to almost any corner of the earth and find someone with similar roots as you.
Whether it’s the USA, Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, or even Montserrat - you won’t have to look very hard to find an Irish name.
In reality, why a lot of these people ended up in these countries isn’t always a very positive story, but one of the most crucial parts of our history is Deoraithe na hÉireann - The Exiles of Ireland.
For centuries, the people of Ireland were stripped of their land, denied religious freedom, deprived of their native tongue, given no voice in government, exiled across the world, starved by an occupying power, forced to emigrate on coffin ships, and even had a slice of our country taken as if it were a piece of cake. And to put the icing on that cake, the people - your family and mine - who fought for freedom were treated as criminals for resisting.
A life like this leaves scars, anger, trauma, and even humiliation. Because of this, the Irish exiles founded organisations abroad, continuing the fight for Ireland's freedom and preserving our culture in a new land.
On Easter Monday, 1916, the most important document in the history of Ireland was read outside the GPO in Dublin. In the second paragraph, it states “le tacaíocht óna clann atá ar deoraíocht i Meiriceá”, delcaring that this Irish uprising was “supported by her exiled children in America”.
This is the Limited-Edition, Handcrafted Deoraithe na hÉireann Pendant, commemorating the Exiles of Ireland, who keep our culture alive all over the world.
