Versican is a large extracellular matrix proteoglycan primarily secreted by mesenchymal cells and belonging to the hyaluronan-binding lectican family; its core structure comprises an N-terminal G1 domain (responsible for stable binding to hyaluronan and link proteins), a central region containing glycosaminoglycan (GAG) attachment domains (GAG-β and/or GAG-α) that are covalently linked to chondroitin sulfate chains to confer significant hydration capacity, turgor pressure, and elastic buffering to tissues, and a C-terminal G3 domain that mediates interactions with other matrix components such as fibulins, selectins, and growth factors.
