Explore the controversial and thought-provoking concept of totalitarianism with David Roberts' insightful book. This brand new volume provides a wide-ranging introduction to totalitarianism, examining its historical evolution and modern implications. Delve into the political theory surrounding totalitarianism from the 1920s to the present, including a detailed analysis of classic regimes such as Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the Stalinist Soviet Union. Discover how the concept extends into the 21st century, analyzing contemporary regimes like Communist China, Vladimir Putin's Russia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and even the challenges posed by the technological surveillance state.

Roberts presents a compelling argument that totalitarianism should be recognized not merely as a system of oppression, but as an aspiration influencing political discourse today. This book is essential for students, scholars, and anyone interested in understanding the ongoing impact of totalitarian ideologies on our modern political universe.

Description:
Less than a century old, the concept of totalitarianism is one of the most controversial in political theory, with some proposing to abandon it altogether. In this accessible, wide-ranging introduction, David Roberts addresses the grounds for skepticism and shows that appropriately recast”as an aspiration and direction, rather than a system of domination”totalitarianism is essential for understanding the modern political universe Surveying the career of the concept from the 1920s to today, Roberts shows how it might better be applied to the three ""classic"" regimes of Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the Stalinist Soviet Union. Extending totalitarianism™s reach into the twenty-first century, he then examines how Communist China, Vladimir Putin's Russia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), and the threat of the technological śsurveillance stateť can be conceptualized in the totalitarian tradition. Roberts shows that although the term has come to have overwhelmingly negative connotations, some have enthusiastically pursued a totalitarian direction”and not simply for power, control, or dominationThis volume will be essential reading for any student, scholar or reader interested in how totalitarianism does, and could, shape our modern political world.

definitive and final statement
This is the definitive and final statement on marxian dialectical materialism. The best concise exposition that has been written on the subject.

I'd recommend it, especially at this give-away-price
As a sociologist, I was always interested as to how the USSR could morph what Marx considered communalism networked by a shallow, weak, centralized and supposedly representative government into what I would considered an extremest left-wing oligarchy (most fashionably consider it right-wing despite how it was sold and supported by the people that allowed it- so much for cultural relativity and in context social analysis!). If Stalin actually wrote these pieces (or more commonly among dictators farmed it out to a frightened academic ghostwriter) then it could help explain why Marx disassociated himself with much of the Marxist movement toward the end of his life. It is a logically written and well informed book - worth the read if you are into the sociology of politics, philosophy of politics or the history of politics. I'd recommend it, especially at this give-away-price!

Good book, mediocre edition
Format: Paperback
This review pertains to the quality of this edition's editing and construction, rather than the content of the book itself. Rest assured that the text itself remains a valuable piece of introductory theory. The book is fairly well constructed, with paper and a binding that is sturdy enough for general use. However, my copy had several manufacturing errors including folded over pages being stuck into the binding. In addition, there are several misspelled words throughout the text and some obvious typos (missing letters, incorrect capitalization and punctuation) that did not majorly impact the readability of the text, but were, nevertheless, annoying. Considering the low price of this edition the manufacturing errors are hardly a big deal, but I would have preferred the text itself to have been treated with more care and respect while being prepared for printing.

thoughts on Xi Jinping
Format: Kindle
This book was highly organized and very easy to comprehend. I have formed a much better understanding of Xi Jinping and where he is taking China. Although I feel he has been thoughtful and successful in some areas such as improving China economically, I don’t feel his autocratic approach will succeed in the long run when more Chinese people will demand to be heard. Just as Mao thought didn’t outlast Mao, Xi thought will not outlast Xi.
