On 16 October 1890, Michael Collins was born in Woodfield (Doire Luain) in County Cork. In 1906, he moved to London where he worked as a clerk for the Post Office Savings Bank but would eventually become a senior clerk for an American stockbroking firm. While in London, Collins was involved with the GAA and the Gaelic League, which would lead him to meet Sam Maguire, who swore him into the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB).

In late 1915, Collins decided to move home to Ireland, and only a few months later, he would take part in the 1916 Easter Rising as aide-de-camp to Joe Plunkett. In the aftermath, he was imprisoned in Frongoch Internment Camp in Wales, but was released in December 1916.

On 21st January 1919, Ireland declared its independence. Irish members of parliament refused to recognise the British parliament and formed an assembly of their own in the Mansion House, Dublin. This was the beginning of the Irish War of Independence, in which Michael Collins would rise to fame as Director of Intelligence of the Irish Republican Army. He was an incredible guerrilla warfare strategist and organised several successful attacks on the British forces.

After the ceasefire, Collins was selected as one of five negotiators to go to London for the Treaty debates. The negotiators for forced so sign the Treaty after threat of "immediate and terrible war" by British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.

The IRA split between those in favour of the Treaty (becoming the Free State National Army) and those who opposed it (Anti-Treaty IRA) and the Irish Civil War broke out in June 1922 and lasted until May 1923.  

On 22 August 1922, Collins was killed in an ambush in Béal na Bláth, County Cork, and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
